Rancilio Group supports the “STEM Like a Lady” project »
Rancilio Group has chosen to partner "STEM Like a Lady", the project promoted by the Gruppo Giovani Imprenditori di Confindustria Alto Milanese (North West Milan Industrial Young Entrepreneurs Confederation) to combat the Gender Gap in STEM professions.

"STEM Like a Lady" springs from a need to overcome the prejudices surrounding the alleged unsuitability of STEM subjects and professions – Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics – for women. This stereotyped way of thinking is widespread and gradually leads schoolgirls to move away from these subjects in favour of others, a decision which inevitably conditions their future careers.
The project sets out to make younger girls aware of the issue and to encourage their interest in science subjects, emphasizing that these are neither a prerogative of men nor beyond women's reach. Statistics show that, in Italy, no more than 5% of girls have ambitions to pursue an engineering career, compared to 18% of boys, and that the number of female students who complete their engineering studies is a mere 6,800 compared to 20,600 males, which determines a gender employment gap of 19%. Another interesting figure has been published by OCSE, according to which, the bridging of the gender gap could increase the GDP of European countries by as much as 12% in just 15 years.
Groups of students attending the third, fourth and fifth years of Secondary Schools of all types in the North West Milan area, captained by a Project Leader, will challenge each other in a Creative Contest by presenting a project on a topic prompted by Rancilio Group: "A cup of coffee is never just a cup of coffee: interaction with the 2.0 coffee machine".
Following a visit to the premises of Rancilio Group Spa, the groups may choose to present one of the following: a new product concept, an innovative and/or sustainable solution, a service or an organizational innovation. By exploiting the potential offered by the digital revolution, students are encouraged to apply economic, technological and digital knowhow, as well as cross-functional skills such as creativity, spirit of innovation, propensity to teamwork and public speaking.
"We invite the Project Leaders - explains Giorgio Rancilio, CEO Rancilio Group Spa – to imagine what the Rancilio coffee machine could do, in addition to its existing functions, to offer an innovative service. Our product interacts with numerous types of operators, from coffee roasters, to the barista and end customer. We would like the teams to imagine a new mode of interconnection between these players, by exploiting the potential offered by the digital revolution. We will offer the girls an opportunity to visit and get a firsthand view of our production floors, accompanied by our managers, enabling them to use this experience to develop skills that will be useful in the workplace".
The 5 best ideas will be presented in video form on 2 December at the BCC Auditorium of Busto Garolfo and Buguggiate. The winners will spend a day discovering the stimulating world of STEM and their video will be included among the projects submitted to the National Contest of JCI Italy, a partner of the project, along with BCC of Busto Garolfo and Class Editori.
The company's participation in the "STEM Like a Lady" project is just one of the activities supported by Rancilio Group to promote gender equality in the workplace. Rancilio Group organizes special activities within the company to safeguard women's rights and employs numerous women in strategic roles of responsibility in various departments.
