Rancilio Group with Re-Cig® transforming waste into raw materials

In 2023, Rancilio Group partnered with Re-Cig®, installing cigarette bins in the company’s break areas. This marked the start of the “Smokers Point” project, the aim being to promote the correct disposal of smoking waste and raise employees’ awareness about the toxic impact of tobacco, on both health and the environment.

In 2024, the second year of the initiative has confirmed the project’s efficacy, bringing real results that have been documented in the Annual Report:

  • ― 16,14 kg of butts recovered
  • ― 53,795 equivalent cigarettes
  • ― 8,07 kg of Re-CA® products
  • ― 38,57 kg of CO2 equivalent avoided

  • “This report highlights the results we have achieved during the past year. We are confident that the data gathered will help people to fully understand the importance of our undertaking and its positive effects on the environment, ” Nicolò Liso, RSPP & HSE Manager of Rancilio Group “ This project is not just a tangible sustainability action for us, it is also an opportunity for strengthening the culture of shared responsibility within our company.”

Re-Cig® is an excellence in the circular economy: it uses an innovative process to transform cigarette butts, composed mainly of cellulose acetate, into a new resource. After collection in “Smokers Points”, the filters are separated, purified and regenerated into cellulose acetate, a versatile plastic used to make everyday objects such as eyeglass frames and buttons. This process not only helps to reduce the quantity of microplastics scattered in the environment, it lends new value to a form of highly polluting waste, the improper disposal of which is a growing threat to ecosystems.
